Petit Verdot is most commonly known as a Bordeaux blender used primarily for color, tannin, and its earthy components. When we have enough leftover from our reserve blends, we traditionally bottle it as 100% varietal and only release it to VIP customers of the winery and Wine Club members! The color is an extracted garnet color and leads into an explosive nose with aromas of ripe dark fruit, minerals, blackberry, and boysenberry. The mouth-feel is full of rustic flavors of black fruit, earth, leather, dried creek bed, and spice. The finish is impossibly long and exotic flavors of stone fruit, earth, and tannin, a finish that tapers into clay and dried plum.
The 2018 vintage saw an almost ideal balance of vine health and stress, as is often the case with the first dry year after a very wet one. The rain came late, delaying the onset of bud break and the beginning of the growing season. The cool weather continued most of the year, punctuated by a six-week heat wave in July and early August. Temperatures moderated before picking began and harvest proceeded under slightly cooler than normal conditions, producing fruit with intense flavors and balanced acidity.
